Alissa Sternagle, a corporate safety training manager at Cheshire, Connecticut, based Lane Construction Corp., and Cory Gaye, the corporate safety director for York, Pennsylvania, headquartered Wagman, Inc., have been elected to the Safety Certification for Transportation Project Professionals™ (SCTPP) program’s Certification Commission.

The nine-member commission is independently appointed by the ARTBA Foundation and is responsible for the governance of the certification program. Commissioners provide leadership and ongoing oversight of SCTPP operations.

The SCTPP program was launched with the aim to significantly reduce—or ideally eliminate—the 700 motorist and worker fatalities, and nearly 50,000 injuries that occur annually in and around U.S. transportation project sites. It is targeted at elevating safety awareness among non-safety professionals in the industry—planners, designers, owners, field supervisors and inspectors—who are in decision-making roles from project conception through completion.

Nearly 500 industry professionals have earned the certification credential since its late 2016 launch.

Sternagle has a long career in safety operations. She is responsible for creating and implementing safety training programs and improving training, having earlier overseen safety teams and operations in multiple states throughout the Southeast. Before joining Lane, Sternagle was at Skanska U.S.A., serving on large complex projects in safety positions in both Tennessee and South Carolina. She has a B.S. in business administration, is a certified manager of environmental safety and health (MESH) and a certified occupational safety specialist (COSS).

Gaye has nearly 25 years of professional safety experience, focusing his efforts on helping people working in the construction industry safely return home every day. Gaye also held various roles in the fire service for 15 years, including EMT and training officer positions. He earned a bachelor’s in safety science from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Both newly elected commissioners have previously earned the SCTPP credential.

The commission is led by the chief executive officers of two of the largest transportation construction firms in the United States – David Walls, president & CEO of Austin Industries, based in Dallas, Texas, and Ross Myers, chairman & CEO of Allan Myers, based in Worcester, Pennsylvania.
